On the 10th of June 1998, the USAF's last operational RF-4C (QRF-4C 65-0944) successfully completed it's last mission... i.e. It was destroyed/Shot down, there by bringing to a close 35 years of Recon Rhino's in US markings.
The first Air Force Recon Rhino was YRF-4C 62-12200 (Ironically originally scheduled to become a USN F-4B) which first flew on the 8th August 1963 and went on to become the prototype F-4E. The first unit to receive the new Phantoms was the 33rd Tactical Reconnaissance Training Squadron, 363 TRW at Shaw AFB in September 1964. The first RF-4's for the Air National Guard were received by the Alabama's 106 TRS in February 1971 and the USMC received their Recce version, RF-4B in 1965.

Presented below is a rundown on all US unit's that operated the RF-4. A note about unit designations and Tail Codes will be in order...
Designations - We've used the last current designation for the unit's, most units during the RF-4C's service changed designations, from either Tactical Reconnaissance Group (TRG) to Wing (TRW) and also from TRW to plain Reconnaissance Wing (RW)
Tail Codes - On April 1st 1972 the basic USAF maintanance concept changed from squadron to wing level (AFM66-1). As a result tail codes were assigned on a wing basis rather than squadrons. Therefore Tail codes in bold are the wing assigned codes after April 1972.
