This
shot is from my very first roll of slides. I was visiting a friend in
the Phoenix area, and we hit the transient ramp at Luke AFB every morning
and afternoon for the few days that I was there. This is one of the first
Navy adversaries that I got a good look at, and has always been one of
my favourites. 7-30-83 Luke AFB Az |

F-5F 84-0456 from VFC-13 was shot during Fallon's Airshow on 1st May 1999.
I had made arrangements with a pilot from the squadron to take me over
to their ramp, after my tour the previous day was rained out. I had to
miss the A-10 flight demo, but I did pick off 10 F-5's!

I
started shooting pictures of military aircraft
as an extension of my aircraft-modeling hobby in 1980 at the age of 15. It quickly
became a favourite past time of mine, and was fuelled even further when in my
10th grade drafting class, I met up with three guys who were as rabid
about this hobby as myself.
Two
of them were military dependants, so access to the many Southern California
bases in the area was unlimited. We only lived about 30 miles north of NAS Miramar,
and it was a frequent target. We ended up getting to know the Public Affairs
Officer at Top Gun. She was very nice, and never refused us a tour. It was on
Top Guns ramp that it happened.... I became a huge fan of USN adversary aircraft,
a passion that is still with me today. Unfortunately, I didn't start shooting
slides until shortly before I joined the USAF in 1985.
In
the last year I have made numerous trips in the western US, with NAS Fallon
being a favourite. Fortunately, I now live only about two miles from Hill
AFB, Utah. Along the way, one of my old shooting buddies from 10th grade joined
the USAF, and is now a TSGT stationed at Hill, so once again, access is available.
We discovered that base ops at Hill will let us shoot pictures of transient
aircraft, as long as we get the pilots permission. This will no doubt lead
to many productive days in the future!
I
spent a few years stationed at Eielson AFB Alaska as a weapons loader on A-10s
of the 18th TFS. The daily BS of the military quickly burned me out, and I turned
my camera to trains instead. I shot trains from about 1985 until 1998, before
I again turned my trusty F3HP to aircraft.
